Lanterne Magique Day Care Centre
Non-profit day care centre
The Lanterne Magique is a 300 sq. m day care centre built in 2004 on Boulevard Babin Chevaye in the middle of Island. The centre accommodates 35 children and 14 staffers. Located next to the elementary school and opening onto Square Gustave Roch, it is the first component of the renovation of the block in the centre of this neighbourhood.
The building is situated on the edge of a triangular lot, which creates a recreation space protected from the street. Oxidized Cor-Ten steel was used for the main façade and the walls, recalling the industrial heritage of the Island. The rough aspect of the steel is softened by the metal plates on the façade featuring floral cut-outs that allow the light to filter at night like a “magic lantern”.
